About Me

Welcome to Record My Family History!

My name is Mary-Jill Johnston.

15 years ago I discovered that my aunt and uncle had been interviewed about their lives, and their tape recorded interviews had been preserved and stored in the National Library of Australia Oral History Program!

Imagine my surprise and delight when I listened to the recordings and found out personal information about my family that I had never known existed!

So…I got to work and learnt how to record family histories.

Through trial and error I discovered:

- the best ways to ask questions

- what equipment to use

and what questions to ask!

For 10 years I have recorded oral histories for my family, friends, community groups and private clients.

I have worked in the Oral History Section of the National Library of Australia and I am a member of the Oral History Association of Australia and the International Oral History Association.

People have often asked me, ‘ I’d love to find out more about my own family, but I don’t know where to begin! I don’t know what questions to ask! I don’t know how to interview someone!’

So I have compiled all my knowledge into one great e-book to share with you.

I hope you are as excited as I am when you discover things about your family history you never knew.

Wishing you health, wealth and many treasured memories,

Mary-Jill Johnston BA
